Last year (2019) was our first annual prayer retreat with HGP and we did a really fun and unique activity on our last night there called “The Transparency Room”. During this time, everyone shared their testimony in an artistic way; through a poem, a song, a dance or they just poured their heart out to the group. It was one of the hardest things I had done. I literally had just started opening up about some things in my past like a few months prior, so this was a big step for me. I shared things that I never admitted to anyone, through a poem. And now…I’m going to share it with you.

“Little girl, little girl, wonder are you listening. Little girl, little girl, struggling with your confidence. Little girl, little girl, God made you so beautiful. Little girl, little girl, I just thought that you should know.”

What do you say to the little girl whose parents divorced because her father chose drugs over his family? What do you say to the little girl who was molested by the neighborhood girls that she thought were her friends? What do you say to the only little black girl in her entire class who was picked on for having “black gums”? What do you say to the little girl who has to grow up quickly and watch after her little autistic brother while also watching him get bullied every single day? What do you say to the little girl whose family had to rely on public transportation and friends to take her and her brother to school and her mom to work? What do you say to the little girl who lived in a hotel for months because they had nowhere to live? What do you say to the little girl who is constantly asked “Is that your mom? Doesn’t look like it”? What do you say to the little girl who compares herself to everyone around her and develops low self-esteem and an eating disorder? What do you say to the little girl who is raped five days after giving her life to Christ? What do you say to the little girl who gets a taste of “freedom” in college and starts letting men take advantage of her”? What do you say to the little girl who loses her grandmother, fails accounting and is home alone when her home is broken into all in the same year? What do you say to the little girl who contemplates suicide multiple times because she thinks the world would be better without her? What do you say to the little girl who is now 26 years old and hasn’t healed?

You tell her Romans 5:8, But God showed His great love for you by sending Christ to die for you while you were still a sinner. You tell her 1 Corinthians 13:7, Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful & endures through every circumstance. You tell her 1 John 4:10, Romans 8:38-39, 1 Corinthians 13:13, Psalms 33:5, and every other scripture in the bible that shows her that God will never leave her nor forsake her. That she is fearfully and wonderfully made. You tell her that she is not a failure nor a mistake. You tell her that she is strong and that she can do anything she puts her mind to because she can do all things through Christ who gives her strength.

So little girl, little girl, I hope you’re listening. Little girl, little girl, you no longer have to struggle with your confidence. Little girl, little girl, God made you so beautiful. Little girl, little girl, I just thought that you should know.

I thank God, I don’t look like what I’ve been through.

My poem is based on one of my fave songs:
